Christian Schad was a German painter who captured the decadence of the 1920s in his portraits of Weimar Germany. His work is associated with the New Objectivity movement and the Dada art movement.

A Morning of “Clocks and Watches” with Simon Bull

Simon Bull is an independent consultant in horology, instruments and early enamels, working to complete a book on French enamel watches 1600-1680.  With Christies from 1969 to 1990, and on several BBC programmes from 1974-2011 including Going for a Song and the Antiques Road Show, he is also an enthusiastic collector of vintage motor cars.

“The Art of the Enameller in France 1600-1685”. 

Enamel is basically glass and its manufacture dates back to circa 3500 BC. The earliest known application to metal dates back to the 13th. century BC. However, for a period of less than one hundred years, the art of the enameller reached a level of innovation and perfection in France that had never been seen before nor since. Almost a dozen different techniques were employed by the largely Huguenot craftsmen based in Blois and Paris. Simon will use examples drawn almost exclusively from his own collection to illustrate the lecture, the majority of which are unpublished and unseen. 

After coffee Simon will look at any watches and (small) clocks you may bring along.
